I created this dramatic image at low tide from the Ravenswood Preserve in East Palo Alto, CA.
A few weeks before I create this image my wife and I spent the day at the preserve. It was low tide and I was intrigued by the texture of the mudflat.
I could envision the blue light of the dawn sky reflected in the pools of water. I felt the image would be both visually captivating and restful.
I checked my tide tables and went back the next time low tide and dawn coincided.
I've always liked dawn landscape photography. The air is usually very clear and it's quite peaceful. There are some inherent dangers to wandering around the landscape in the dark carrying 40 pounds of camera gear, but the results alway make the effort worthwhile.
Dean Birinyi is a residential and commercial interiors and architecture photographer based in San Francisco, CA. I began my career as a photographer in April of 1986. My first job as a photographer was photographing baby portraits in K-Mart Department Stores. I loved the work but not the job.
